In this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens review, we’ll be delving into one of the most versatile prime lenses for Nikon DSLRs from the highly respected NIKKOR range.

Let’s start off by talking about what it’s good for. With a 50mm focal length and f1.8 aperture, it’s pretty versatile if you enjoy aesthetically pleasing background Bokeh in your shots along with ultra-crisp foreground isolation. However,  it simply excels is in portrait photography, with foreground sharpness and background blur which really adds an impressive and professional touch to any photograph.

We would recommend it without question for portrait photography alone, but you’ll find that you can use it many other ways as well in close-to-mid focus scenes. This will give you a lot of versatility for a prime lens and a lot of use for your money – especially considering the very affordable price.

This aperture range also makes it ideal for low-light conditions, allowing it to work superbly during indoor shoots whether they’re portrait or otherwise. This only serves to add to the versatility if you’re particularly interested in Bokeh, as there are few situations where this lens won’t produce some impressive photographs.

With a 7-blade aperture diaphragm and aspherical lens combined with top-notch NIKKOR optics, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens produces very pleasing levels of sharpness, clarity and colour without distortion. It certainly offers image quality on par with much more expensive lenses out there.

The Silent Wave Motor autofocus is accurate and quick, with the handy addition of manual-priority autofocus which allows you to instantly swap from AF to MF when fine-tuning your shots. This alone opens up much more control over focus isolation and Bokeh results.

Our review verdict:

A 50mm prime lens is a staple of many photographers’ kits, and we would highly recommend the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G if you’re looking to add a 50mm to your own collection for your Nikon DSLR. It’s superb for portrait photography yet very versatile for other uses as well, and provides excellent image quality for what is a very affordable price tag indeed.

Construction:

As expected with all NIKKOR lenses, the build quality is rock solid and made to last. Plus, as it’s a prime lens, it’s very small and weighs in at only 185 grams, so it’s a great addition to carry around when you’re out on the go.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens review features:

  • A fixed yet versatile 50mm focal length
  • f/1.8 aperture for tight focus isolation and stunning Bokeh background blur
  • Small, compact and lightweight
  • Autofocus with rapid manual focus override
  • Aspherical lens for enhanced image quality
  • SWM for whisper-quiet and fast autofocus

Perfect if:

  • You want to capture portrait photography
  • You want to take shots in low-light conditions
  • You want to take still-life shots
  • You need a versatile prime lens for your collection

Camera compatibility

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens has a standard F-mount and will therefore work with the vast majority of Nikon DSLRs, including the FX and DX ranges. However, do note that on FX sensor DSLRs, you will get the 50mm focal length, but with DX format cameras, the angle of view will be equivalent to a 75mm lens due to the sensor crop of that range. Still a fantastic choice for either type of DSLR, however.
